Designing a Deck with Creativity in Mind

outdoor deck space

Independence Day has passed, and it’s safe to say we’re hitting the peak of summer. During these next few months, Minnesotans will be taking full advantage of the beautiful warm weather. Is there a better way to enjoy the gorgeous days to come than on the deck? While there’s no one-size-fits-all design for decks or porches, there are plenty of ways to create a unique and practical outdoor space. Use the four tips below to help your deck stand apart from the rest!

Layered Design

Similar to a layered cake, decks are enticing when they feature more than one level. Multi-level decks are a great way to add value to your home and create additional space for entertaining friends and family. If your yard allows it, consider adding a second level. Short on space? Even adding a step or two, leading to a cove on the side of the deck, can make a big difference!

Railing Decor

Railings are a must-have when it comes to safety, but that doesn’t mean they have to be boring! You can add more visual appeal with a mix of wood, metal, or even glass materials. Cable railings have been trendy for a while and can give your deck a more modern look. Or if you prefer a more sophisticated style, opt for a finish like bent iron.

Seating Features

Why spend money on a bunch of additional furniture when you can incorporate built-in seating? Adding benches and seating areas to a deck is practical and adds visual interest. Do you love having friends and family over for summer BBQs? A built-in bar with custom seating is sure to impress!

Flooring Layout

Even the simplest of decks has room for unexpected design details. Our favorite idea: laying boards in a fun pattern. Some of our favorites include incorporating an octagonal design in a curved-edge deck and a diagonal design where sets of boards meet in the middle. Another option is to use a different colored board around the edges to create some definition. For more flooring layouts, check out these ideas from Houzz.
